Make Craigslist your Internet Business!

“What? You’ve got to be kidding me?”  That’s probably what you are thinking, but, it isn’t too crazy.  Think about it. People make a living from selling at yard sales and flea markets, what is so different about using Craigslist?  Nothing much, the only difference is that instead of having to travel to get to market, the market, in essence, comes to you.

What is Craigslist?

Craigslist is a website for posting classified ads and discussion forums.  Earlier this year, I casually browsed the Politics and Community section for northern Virginia (Alexandria and the environs) and there were some pretty heated discussions about all sorts of political topics.  People go to this site all the time.  In fact, research has shown that Craigslist is the 40 most trafficked site in the world.

Craig Newmark from the San Francisco Bay Area founded Craigslist in 1995 and incorporated it in 1999.  Since its incorporation, there have been over 500 cities where a Craiglist “hub” has been established!

What should I sell?

My recommendation is that you do your research and find what is trending in your locality.  But some reliable bets are things like, collectibles, antiques, appliances, pets, services, etc. etc. etc.   If people want it, they can usually get it on Craigslist.  I also suggest that you take the time find hot items that you can get at a discount, which is the reason most people buy from craigslist.

How do I sell it?

Posting Ads to Craigslist.org is pretty simple.  Make sure that you get the hang of navigating the site.   This may take a little bit of time if you are inexperienced with the internet or computer, but it will be a great training to get you more familiarized with it as well.

What you will want to do is:

•           Login to your Craigslist account:  The page will be kind of sparse and show any other ads you have running.

•           Click on the word “Craigslist”:  This is on the upper left of the screen.  When you do, you’ll be taken to the main Craigslist.org website

•           Select the city you want to post in.  Depending on your area, you may have to continue to “dig deeper” for sub areas or localities within a city.  After you do this the Craigslist page will “reload” for that particular area.

•           Pick the appropriate category for your marketing angle.

•           Click on the “post” link in the upper right hand corner of the site

•           Compose your ad and submit it:  You will notice that when you post your ads, craigslist will ask for a headline (which is obvious) and a location (I would re-enter the city you are posting).

Make sure that you write an add that is convincing and that you also take the time to put pictures in your ad.  One of my biggest frustrations is trying to figure out whether or not some good deal on Craigslist is worth my time.

Get out there, do your research, and start making money online with your internet business!
