Laptop or Desktop for your home based business
Recently a friend and I were discussing an article that gave tips on working from home in your home based business. While there were several troubling points, there was one main point that I wanted to dissect and analyze: having a desktop computer over a laptop.
Often the dream of having a home based business clouds the true reality of the difficulties you unearth at home. One major difficulty that you will run into is the distractions. I found that I was much more distracted having a home business than when I worked for corporate America. These distractions can range from wanting to do laundry while working, to convincing people that you can’t go and play just because you are at home.
One way to overcome these distractions is to have a desktop computer over a laptop. This may seem counter-intuitive, but trust me, rarely will you take your laptop and leave the house to go work (hence why we call it a home base business and not a traveling business). What a laptop does is make you mobile around the house. Instead of having a designating place in the home to work, you will be all over the house. For example, it’s quite difficult to move your desktop out of your work room and place it in the living room so you can watch television. Granted, you could move the T.V. into your work room, but I have found that when you really want to work that arrangement doesn’t last long.
It took me a while to learn this principle. Oftentimes I wouldn’t even get out of bed for the day and just work on my laptop. This may seem ideal, but I would often find it much easier to nap and day dream than to work.
My point is that a desktop computer allows you to create a place that separates you from your casual living. Unfortunately, a laptop seems to be the antithesis to productivity. Truly with a desktop computer you will be able to weed out the unnecessary distractions and get more work done on your home business. Yesterday I wrote about the benefits of a desktop computer over a laptop. Today I hope to give you some tips on how to get the best deal when purchasing your desktop for your home based business.
Let me start off with a warning. Don’t buy your computer at a local retail store. Stores like Circuit City and Walmart have decent prices on computers. Any guesses as to the reason those computers are so cheap? You guessed it! The software they have is either lousy or a 30 day trial version. Cnet is a reliable website that gives great ratings and reviews of technology gadgets and it can help you decide on what type of computer to buy and what software you should use.
I would recommend looking for used computers on eBay, Craigslist, local classifieds and even crazedlist.
I personally think that eBay has some great deals but you have to be an avid hunter to find them. Like my father who every Saturday faithfully goes to garage sales to find deals, you need to know where to look and what to bid on.
However, the amount of effort that goes into eBay could be spent on other sites that generally have better deals and are not as well known. This being the case I offer you my top favorite six auction websites to assist you in finding the items you need for your work at home business. If you know other great sites please let me know.
- PropertyRoom.com – A property room is where the police store all the recovered stolen goods. This website auctions the items that the police couldn’t find its owner.
- USA.gov/shopping/shopping.shtml – This is the governments official site for surplus and seized property sales and auctions (both local and federal).
- LastMinute-Auction.com/index.php- A site that shows all eBay auctions that have one hour left and are beneath a dollar.
- BidWarsLive.com/main.php – This site is really hard to explain, but I am a huge fan of it. Warning: bidding becomes addictive.
- AuctionZip.com – Helps you find auctions in your neighborhood. .
- DellAuction.com – A great site for getting good deals on Dell computers.
Do your research and you can find a good computer that will serve you well in your home based business and will help you make money online!

I was just searching for this information for some time. After 6 hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your site. I wonder what is the Google’s problem that does not rank this type of informative websites closer to the top. Usually the top websites are full of garbage.

Hmm it looks like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any tips for newbie blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.

on top-end laptops you shdnolut notice a difference. usually lower-end laptops (read: budget laptops) use slower hard drives which effectively decreases read-write speeds on the hard drive. another problem with laptops is that they are harder to upgrade. Hard drives, and RAM are relatively simple to upgrade, but if you are looking to upgrade the processor or video card you will probably end up spending more than you bargained for, and your best bet at that point would be to buy a new laptop.Laptops also tend to get very hot when using them for extensive periods of time and may require additional cooling from an external unit if you plan to use the laptop for things like gaming or plan to use it as a desktop replacement.Even though i knock on laptops above, they are very useful too. They are compact for one thing. They are great on college campuses, and if you travel they provide you with unlimited access to all your information, whether stored at home or work.looking for a gaming pc or something that is just as cpu intensive, i say go for a desktop.looking for portability and just having average joe applications (web browsing, email, word proccessor, dvd player, occasional gaming) wherever you are, i say go for a laptop. choosing also depends on your budget. but thats a big discussion on its own.
