Selling on eBay from home! Take your home based business ideas from dream into a reality!

Do you have a great home based business idea?  Do you have something to sell, but can’t afford to set up a store?  If so, eBay is the place for you.  You can setup your home based business and make money online without the cost of actually having a store or employees.  This will be more intensive than some of the other methods of making money online that we have discussed on the blog, but if you have something to sell, then this is for you.

Ebay is a reliable, secure marketplace that people know and trust, which makes selling there such a good idea.  There are many benefits using eBay to make your home based business ideas a reality.  The biggest benefit is the low start up and maintenance cost.  In addition to having low start up costs, you also have no website to build, and have a nearly inexhaustible supply of customers.  You won’t have to worry about renting a building either, because eBay will be your storefront.  This is a great opportunity to have a home based business because eBay will connect you to your potential clientele and will facilitate the transaction.

Why do most people go to eBay?  They usually are there to find great bargains on all sorts of items.  They really like hard to find items, collector’s pieces, and popular items that are usually really expensive in other places.

Let’s list some of the most important things you will need to get your home based business ideas off the ground through eBay.

  • A digital camera
  • Something to sell
  • Internet access
  • A computer
  • Passion for selling your product
  • Dedicated space in your house to keep track of and store things for your business
  • An eBay account
  • A paypal account

Signing up for eBay is simple and the first real step in setting up your home based business.  Just go to eBay.com, register, and you’re ready to start selling.  To sell, click on the “sell” link at the top of the screen so you can take advantage of this opportunity you can get selling right away and make money for your home based business.  When signing up with a paypal account you’ll want to sign up for at least the premier and if your home based business is successful enough, for the business account.

Don’t put yourself or your business from home at a disadvantage when you sign up with eBay!  You want to inspire confidence in your potential customers so when you sign up for eBay you’ll want to look as professional as possible.  As a parent, you would never just randomly choose your newborn’s name, so don’t choose just any name when you register your home based business on eBay.  Make sure you choose a store name that deals with what you are selling and is professional.  The more professional you appear online, the better reputation that you will develop and the more credibility you’ll gain with your potential and actual clientele.

As you browse around on eBay, take note of the different seller sites and the different ways that sellers use to project professionalism.  Learn from these people!  The best way to grow your business from home is to be professional, so take notes and pay attention to what they do.

Now that you’ve gotten setup and are ready to sell, you have to ask yourself, “Why on earth would someone buy something they won’t touch until they get it, from someone they have never met, somewhere they have never been?”  They could just as easily get something similar from the clearance rack at Target and know all about it from looking at it and touching it.

You have to make your home based business more compelling than going to the store.  Sure, your home based business has the benefit of being online and easy, but that isn’t enough to make someone buy from you.  You have to give yourself the edge when you sell online and make these ideas a reality!

Two keys to do that successfully are to give a thorough description of the object and to write a compelling advertisement of what you are selling.

The most important part of giving a thorough description of your product that you’re selling from home is including pictures.  EBay doesn’t charge for the first picture, but it does cost to post subsequent pictures.  The extra fees will be small and the added credibility and visibility of the product will make it more likely to be sold.

You know the old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words” right? I know its cliché, but it is true. Think about it.  One thousand words is two full pages of text, and while people want to know as much as they can about the product, they aren’t going to want to read two pages describing what it looks like, especially when they can easily go to someone else’s page and see a picture within seconds.  Seeing a picture is faster and more effective.  You’ll be wasting a huge opportunity for making money from home if you don’t.   If you’re still considering not including pictures you’re your posts, consider what your customers are expecting.  They want to see what it looks like! Wouldn’t you?  To prove me right, search eBay for a few items that you are interested in buying.  Write down what your first impressions are about the pictures.  Do you trust the sellers that don’t have a picture?  Does it add to the professionalism of the seller?  Does it entice you to buy the product?

I’d be willing to bet that you didn’t even want to look at the postings that didn’t have a picture.

You probably also noticed that when you searched and looked at different items you wanted to know more about the object than you saw in the picture.  You probably had all sorts of questions, like: Does it work? Are there any flaws? Does it come with a warrantee?  What are the dimensions?  Does it require batteries?  How long is it supposed to last? And so on!  Be sure to include as much information as possible about the item in addition to the pictures.  People want to know as much as possible about the item before they purchase it.

Take pictures, describe your products in detail, and write compelling copy to entice people to buy your products.   Start with these few steps and you’ll be well on your way to making your home based business a success!
