7 steps for success working at home!
There are many ways to make mistakes about getting a home based business up and running and there are more ways to make working from home fail. I wish I would have had someone to tell me what things to avoid and how to make the most of the time I spend working from home. Some of the tips here are basic and common for anyone who is successful. The others are a little more specific. But make sure to use these to your advantage.
Get up early
Early to bed and early to rise makes a man (or woman) healthy, wealthy, and wise. As trite, or cliché, as that phrase may be, it is true. The longer you stay in bed, the less you will get done. Avoid jumping out of bed five minutes before you have to start “work”. Get up a few hours before you want to start working. Treat it like a real business. If you do it this way, you’ll be more successful and effective.
Get a Business Plan
Your business plan is one of the most important stacks of paper you’ll ever come across in your business. This is important no matter how small your operation is. Making your business successful means that you’ll have to plan for how to market, how to deal with competition, plan for making dough, and figure out how to work with financials. You will want all of this in one convenient location so you can keep on the right path. That way you’ll end up with the prize, and not in the ditch.
Don’t have company over!
Of course, if you’re inviting business contacts over, you’ll want to have them at your business, but you certainly don’t want people to come over just to hang out during business hours. Make sure that your friends know when your business hours are. The more regular you can make them, the easier it will be for not only your friends to know when you’re working, but you’ll be better able to take yourself seriously and succeed.
Get dressed and dress well
The whole idea here is to make sure that you take yourself and your business seriously. You don’t have to wear a suite and tie, but you should dress professionally all the time. This way if you have to suddenly meet a client, you’ll be ready, and you’ll train yourself to think and act professionally.
Make a Marketing Plan
Marketing your product or y our business is just as important as having a business plan. It is so important to have a marketing plan, that you’ll want to spend a good amount of time on it, and look at revising it to make sure that you’re still being effective. This plan will focus on how you get customers and keep them coming back. You’ll want to use this plan to figure out how you’re going to get them, what kind of advertising you will use, outline your marketing goals and track the effectiveness of your campaigns.
Keep the television OFF
My biggest downfall my freshman year of college was not that I was living at home, but that I watched too much TV. Football games, daytime dramas, the news, my favorite sitcoms, etc. etc. etc. I had to work for years to recover from not training my mind to be successful and goal oriented. The television is great if you want to figure out how to veg, but not if you want to figure out how to work and be successful. You’ll get more done too, if you aren’t always looking at the screen.
Have a Financial Plan.
This plan isn’t as easy as the other ones I’ve already talked about. This is more of an assessment of your financial situation and your financial ability. First, make an inventory of your present assets: savings accounts, real estate equity, retirement accounts, etc. This helps you determine: a) if you want to sell anything or use the accounts for funding; or b) what you can use as collateral for a loan. Next, determine your startup costs–all the money you need to get your business off the ground and floating for at least six months while you gather customers and start bringing in cash. This includes paying yourself a salary, because, unfortunately, you can’t live on air during the startup phase.
If you follow these seven basic steps, you’ll be well on your way to training your mind, and having success as you work from home! Let’s make money!
